Modesto Breakfast Club (2017 - Present)
The Breakfast Club is a space for young-ish residents of Modesto to share – share laughs, stories, ideas and dreams. Our mission is to gather young people in the hopes of forming strong relationships that lead to life-long enthusiasm for, and commitment to, a glorious Modesto.
The Breakfast Club is about wanting to be with our peer group. It is about something new, something creative, something that helps people lean into what might be possible if we gather alongside those we choose to share this community with for the next 50 years...and those who will inherit it after us.
In the article Millennials Have Rediscovered the Benefits of Joining a Professional Organization, research stated that more than one-quarter of respondents referred to professional organizations as “old school” and the majority of millennials would "prefer to join an organization founded by peers of a similar age".
From the first Breakfast Club gathering in September or 2016, members have found jobs, made friends, become more civically engaged, started book clubs, found romance, and in all that have significantly increased the likelihood they will choose Modesto as their home deeper into the future. This is what makes sustainable and prosperous communities.
At the same time that we focus on connecting younger generations of Modestans, a key element of this is connecting them to the generations that have done this work of building community before us. Whether it's Lynn Dickerson, CEO of the Gallo Center or Ken Riddick, (now former) Publisher at The Modesto Bee or former County Sheriff Adam Christianson or the entire city council and more, it is critically important to us that we continue to invite those in our community who are instrumental in making it what it is, and hope that in our dialogue, we can help shape the making of what it will become.
